When I got my first Aussie in 1996 I never thought it would take 15 years to have my first homebred Canadian Champion. I never intended on breeding and probably would have laughed at you if you told me how much fun it is to show your dogs.
It took three litters for me to be confident enough in my program to seriously pursue a Canadian Championship on one of my babies. Today my dream did come true. At the Dartmouth Kennel Club show #4 under judge Janet Buchanan, Jaime Boluc of Chic Handling finished Bishop by taking WM for that last pesky point!!
I will post his Championship photo when I get it. But fo now ......

Our hearts are raw and the tears are flowing tonight. I will always be thankful to Mary for sending me my red head. Scandal was not only a beautiful Aussie she was also one heck of a cow dog! She was major pointed in CKC and had a bright future ahead of her. A mishap on the farm with a truck ended her life way to soon. We will always love you Scandal McFrandal!

So entries have been filled out and sent in for some up coming shows. This year we have some newbies on the string and are hoping they make a big splash, there are a few to finish their Championships and some kids jumping at the chance to get into the ring again (let's face it, so am I).

We have moved yet again!! I am getting so tired of packing up and moving, let's hope this is a final move for quite a few years. Trynity and Keara are becoming quite a bit more girly, though they do have their tom-boy moments. Devlin is doing really well in school now that we have a game plan. And then of course there is my walking maniac, Lochlan!

Breed Standard Petition update

Just an update on how the project to follow the ASCA by-laws and allow the membership to vote on the Breed Standards Review Committee revisions is coming. I also need to answer some of the questions I am getting. For those unaware of this effort, there is information and the downloadable petition here: http://users.htcomp.net/slashv/breedstandard.htm

The suggested revisions written by the ASCA Commitee after 7 years of work and membership input are on the first link above. The ASCA Board of Directors stopped the revisions from going to the membership for a section by section vote in 2007. The by-laws allow a revision to go to the membership for vote only with a petition of 20% of the ASCA membership if the Board will not approve it. That is about the percentage who vote in an election where ballots are mailed to each of our homes with an addressed envelope to return them! At this time we have nearly 400 signatures but need close to 1400 to submit the petition. Remember, this petition is NOT a vote to approve the revisions. It is simply a vote to allow membership voting.

Only with a huge effort by the membership will YOU be allowed to vote on these very important revisions that CLARIFY the 1977 Standard.

Some of you have asked:1. Do I have to print this out and mail it or can I do it via the internet? Answer: it must be signed in person and mailed2. Is there a deadline? No, the only deadline is when 1400 signatures are received.3. Must I be an ASCA member to sign? Yes, per the by-laws one must be a member in good standing.4. What else can I do to help with this?a. You can take the petition to shows, trials, and club meetings to get signatures.b. You can write to the ASCA Board of Directors and again ask them to allow the membership to vote. executive.secretary@asca.orgc.

You can send the link to the revisions and petition to all of your friends who are ASCA members.d. If you are on Facebook, join the Group and invite your friends to join.

The letters and notes sent with petitions that I am receiving make me believe even more that Aussie lovers in all venues from conformation to working to obedience to agility to pet owners, believe this is a worthwhile project for this breed we all love.

The Standard now does not, and the revisions do not, favor anyone's dog(s) or bloodline but rather are the written blueprint of the dog that the present 33 year old Standard and annotations was written for.

The revisions CLARIFY the present Standard to ensure that judges and breeders alike totally understand it, because that is NOT happening and some of the fads and trends are alarming.

Thanks to all who will stand up to the Board and tell them that we want the right to vote on this very important document.

Mutton Busting

This weekend is the 57th Annual Water Valley Stampede. Many events are held from Barrel Racing to Wild Horse Racing, from Junior Steer Riding to Mutton Busting. The kids have talked about nothing else for the past week. For those of you who don't know what Mutton Busting is here is the Wikipedia definition ......

"Mutton busting is an event held at rodeos similar to bull riding or bronc riding. In the event, a sheep is held still, either in a small chute or by an adult handler while a child is placed on top in a riding position. Once the child is seated atop the sheep, the sheep is released and usually starts to run in an attempt to get the child off. Often small prizes or ribbons are given out to the children who can stay on the longest. There are no set rules for mutton busting, no national organization, and most events are organized at the local level.
The vast majority of children participating in the event fall off in less than 8 seconds. Age, height and weight restrictions on participants generally prevent injuries to the sheep,[1] and implements such as spurs are banned from use. In most cases, children are required to wear helmets and parents are often asked to sign waivers to protect the rodeo from legal action in that event."

My kids were born and raised in the city. We love the outdoors and the kids adore animals as much as I do. So we decided that this was worth a shot. We have our hockey helmet, our nerves, the video camera (Thanks Mom!!) and off we go to the Rodeo. MB was to be held during intermission, the kids were anxious and a little wild waiting. Finally it was our time. Grandpa came up from Calgary and waited in the stands with Trynity and Lochlan to cheer their siblings on.

Keara was up first. She was awesome!! A little afraid at first but after the first few steps was giggling her way to the finish!

Devlin came next but first we had to herd some sheep back into the chutes. While this was done the announcer interviewed Devlin. For those of you who have never met my oldest son, he is shy. Often at times painfully so. But talking with the announcer you would have never guessed!!

"You told me back there you are ready to ride and your ....."
"I'm not gonna be scared"
"That's right! And what happens .... you told me what your going to do if you get bucked off. What are you going to do?"
"Hop back on the sheep."
"He's going to hop right back on that sheep and ride em again. Alright Devlin, how old are you?"
"Six"
"Alright, give me a high five and go ride a sheep. Get on over there and get your game face on."

Devlin did awesome!! He rode that sheep and did all those city boys proud!

The kids recieved a trophy for their efforts and we can't wait to go back tomorrow to ride again!!

What we've been doing!!

WOW Do we ever love it out here at our new home!! The kids love the space to run and play and even enjoy taking the bus to school. They spent their "holiday" (read: snow day) building an army of snowmen in our yard. Too bad they melted within 24 hours into blobs!!

The kids are even enjoying the horses and eventually Trynity will be off for a week of Horse Sense at a local ranch. The other kids are too young to participate but will be helping mom around here. We have plenty of wildlife roaming through our yard and even the dogs have learned to ignore them (to a point). Locally there are a ton of deer but we also have seen a Red Fox, numerous Coyotes, a bobcat and a moose or two (from the safety of our living room.

We do have dial up internet and a landline now. The beginning of June we will be getting high speed internet and satellite TV (the joys of country living). We have met a few local families and enjoy spending our time outdoors (even in the snow). Most weekdays are filled with walks through our woods.

...... Well that was until I brought out the camera!! Those of you who know my crew know that they think the camera is a soul stealer and HATE having their pics taken. Bliss and the puppies are the only ones who don't seem to mind!!

Trynity LOVES to show dogs. This year is a big year, she is in the Junior Novice class. This means no more participation ribbons and she has o know her stuff. I think I was more nervous than Tryn!

Today she showed a beautiful Smooth Collie specials girl owned by Joanne Friend. (Sorry forgot the registered name at the moment). So Tryity is working with Abbey and goes in to a large class of 9 kids. Trynity was a STAR!! She earned a 3rd place rosette and I couldn't be more proud. She knew her dog and worked it!! We have a few things to work on and perfect but that is what the coming years is for.

Way to go my big girl! I will post the picture as soon as she recieves it!!

My kids growing up a little each day, Trynity acing her spelling and doing almost as well in math! Devlin enjoying school and learning more than last year. Keara becoming funnier each and every day (I swear she should be a comedian). My heart dog turned 10 years young and is a grandma to boot (a grandma at age 70, nice). Colt losing all of his hearing (or so we think, it may be a combination of hard head and deafness). Scandal and Spirit finally learning the meaning of "stand"!! Bliss winning multiple Best of Breeds, Spirit picking up some more points (with very limited showing she is doing good). Hope coming out to play in the bred by class (I was bored LOL). Honor winning a 3rd overall in her first Veteran Sweeps against some pretty dang nice dogs. My first attempt at planning a National Specialty single handed. Wow was that fun. My bestests coming out from BC to spend some time (it had been almost 9 years!). Attending many dog shows, handling the #7 (I took her to #5) Rough Collie in Canada. Winning Best Canadian Bred at the Brittany National, finishing Bliss' FDJ title in one year, watching Keara step into the peewee ring for the first time and totally loving it!! A new partnership and adventure with my best friend. And many more ......

Winter Solstice/Yule

"The Winter Solstice, sometimes referred to as Yule, celebrates the rebirth of the sun to the earth, and the solstice itself is the longest (hence, darkest) night of the year. Throughout the world, from Scotland to Iran to the Americas, ancient and modern peoples have called forth the sun on the longest night of the year."

You may have noticed that the solstice falls near the Christian holiday of Christmas, and that the word Yule is usually associated with that same holiday. Upon closer inspection, you will find many remnants of the pagan holiday within the current Christian celebrations. For example, the Christmas tree that is erected in many homes is a nod to the original pagan celebration of creating a Yule tree. The sturdy, evergreen tree represents life surviving in the darkest time of the year. The Yule tree was decorated with natural ornaments such as berries, rosebuds, and cinnamon sticks. Candles adorned the tree, representing the light of the sun, soon to be reborn. In many traditions, a Yule log is burned throughout the solstice night to provide a light in the darkest night, symbolizing hope and a belief that the sun will return.

December is here with a bang!!

Wow, I am sitting here drinking hot chocolate after spending 20 minutes digging out the back door. The dog run gate has a 5 foot snow embankement against it, I decided not to dig it out just yet!! The dogs are out and in almost right away. Though a few try and brave the blowing snow a tad longer. Scandal came in and half of her body was reminicent of a snowman, the other half was dry as a bone. I almost lost poor Pirate in the snow, he was burrowing his way to the back corner of the yard, his favorite "place".

We have most of our indoor Christmas decorations up, including the tree!! Lochlan really enjoys sitting in his seat under the tree just admiring the lights. Of course with the decorations and snow the kidlets are convinced the big fat man is coming "tonight"! We have our activity advent calendar up so counting the days is a little easier, but not much LOL.

Yesterday my sister, her husband and their first child flew in for a visit! I finally got to meet Keaton, he is so so so so handsome. I hope our boys grow to be fast friends as well as cousins. Missing from the picture is Devlin, who at the time was downstairs with Uncle Luke.

And of course with being the end of the year I hav started planning my show/trial calendar for next year. I do know there few shows I wouldn't miss. One being the 3rd CNASA Nationals in September, the Lakes & District Kennel Club show in May (Burns Lake watch out for the invasion!! lol) and Prince Albert (the judging panel is excellent). Added this year is the NACA show in June, I am sure we will be going to the Calgary and area shows. Though if the trend of $28+ for each show continues I will have to pick and choose who shows which day.

This year Trynity is going to be competing in Junior Novice. She is so excited, practises her anatomy and patterns religously and seems to understand she has to work at winning those placements. I know I am nervous but Tryn is so excited! Keara has expressed interest in competing this year as well, she would be in PeeWee and is learning all she can from her big sister. Devlin is looking forward to starting Karate and I think he would do quite well. As I have said many times, even though I enjoy showing dogs it is not something I PUSH on my kids. Yes they enjoy showing and if they ever decided not to want to play the game anymore I encourage them to do different things.

There will be some exciting news coming in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!!!

Preparations and anticipations

Spirit loves most everything about life. Except maybe being bathed, who knows why. Maybe she thinks she is going to go to a show, which she rates next to torture, or maybe she likes to stay a tomboy and roll in the mud. So when bathing her today, between her moans and "the looks" I told her a little secret ......

If you want to be able to sleep loose in the house you have to be clean!! You need to stay away from the garbage, even if those scraps smell divine!! You need to stay in the "dog area" for awhile, yes that new "bed" is a little uncomfortable but it will be fine, you need to leave the paper in the "bed" and not shred it, just yet. Yes you wil still have 4 small meals a day, yes you will be just fine.

I think I have her convinced that a bath was a nice thing to have. Spirit on the other hand couldn't wait to find a place to roll, thank gawd it was in the leaves!!!

A Welcome Addition

On November 8, 2009 our family was blessed once more with the arrival of Lochlan Dale. He was born at 2:12 pm weighing in at 7 Lbs 6 oz and measuring 21" long.

Lochlan is currently being spoiled by his new big sisters and brother. They just adore him, I was a little worried that Keara would be resentful of not being the baby anymore but she has been so so so good.

When the contractions, which started the tuesday prior, started to get stronger and closer together I knew it was time. I made a phone call to my bff, Richelle, and arranged for the kids to go there until Grandpa could pick them up.

I can't wait to see what the future holds for this little man. With all the love and support we have I am sure he will be another awesome kid! Thank you to all of you who have sent their congrats.

And to top it all off, less than 48 hours before Lochlan was born, my sister and her husband welcomed their own baby! Keaton Gerry Magdy was born on November 6, 2009 at 2:32 pm PST weighing in at 7 lbs 5 oz and 20 1/2" long.

Jayhawker's Smokin At Edana HIC/FDJ

WOW, I can't believe it has been 2 years since I got the phone call on my way to the Red Deer show that the puppies were born. 60 some days since I was out at my first field trials with Kiddy introducing her to Hank. Getting hooked on not only the breed (even more than I was) but also the field trial world.

Looking back on the past two years I am amazed at all we have accomplished together. Bliss was the first Brittany in Canada (that we can find after researching extensively) to recieve a Herding Instinct Certificate, and at just over 6 months old. She confidently lifted the sheep off the wall and drove them the length of the building.

A couple weeks before that we went to her first dog show where she took 4/4 reserve winners bitch and 3/4 Best of Breed puppy.

The first field trial she ran as an Open puppy she and I had no idea what we were doing, it was a nice walk together, lol. She had the misfortune to be braced with her half sister, Boo. But this year we have woken up the bird dog in her and I truly believe she excels in the field more than the show ring. Placing in 3/4 Canadian Field Trials and one awesome run down in the states, makes me super excited for next year!!

Though if Bliss isn't broke to wing and shot (and very solidly) we have plans on breeding her to an outstanding male!

I can't wait for many more years to come with my Blissy Blue!!!

............. Waiting and still waiting. It seems like when you are eagerly anticipating an arrival the days get A LOT longer. And of course the list of "waitings" is getting longer.

1. The arrival of Halloween (not just the kids enjoy it!!)

2. The arrival of my sister's first baby (I am so so so excited)

3. The arrival of #4 to our family (I know I was a little surprised too)

4. The arrival of my first litter in over 2 years (no peeking until the joyous day!)

5. CHRISTMAS!!!!!! (and all the decorating that is involved, always a blast here)

I am sure we could add more but why torture ourselves LOL

In the meantime enjoy this picture (at top) of our first snowfall and Scandal's peeking through the back door. She loved the snow but decided that watching me through the door was better than making snowballs with Spirit.

Hiatus is over!!

Well Ihave taken a huge long hiatus and just worked with dogs, played with kids and enjoyed life. It has been crazy with the addition of new dogs, the move into a new wonderful house and the start of a new breed.

Bliss is a new road and passion but don't think I have forgot about my true love ..... the Aussie. In fact we have been very busy. Scandal has joined our family and I still get out and show the crew. Spirit is the spitting image of her mom and we can not wait until the 2010 CNASA Nationals to show off our crew in vaious events.

Stay tuned as I will try and post new blogs as we go along.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

What an amazing year. We moved into a wonderful home with a huge yard for our kids and dogs. The March CKOC show Trynity & Angel showed in their first official Junior Handling competition. The end of March we travelled to BC for the Brittany Spaniel Club of Canada National Specialty where Tryn showed her first Brittany. May showed us that persistance pasy off. Colt finishes his Championship with group placements, Sizzle takes a Group 3rd which puts her on 7 points (now to keep coat on her), Spirit enters her first dog show. July starts off with my favorite Brittany boy, Pete, taking BOB at his first show. Finishing his Championship in a total of 7 days of showing undefeated from the puppy classes. Then we take some time off for school, but we did attend a few more shows, for Trynity to practice and for mom, Sherri, to play with some wonderful Brittany clients.

With many new shows and many new friends this year we can't wait to start 2008 off with a bang. Watch our webpage for some exciting news!!!

One year ago today Honor and Ty welcomed 7 bundles of joy into this world. Little Miss Faith didn't have the strength to make it but 6 of the other puppies did. Today they are grown, healthy and in loving families. Thank you to those families who have taken these little babies into their lives!!

Wow! I can't believe that 5 years ago today I was in the hospital getting ready (not so silently) to have my first child. When she was born I thought she was the most beautiful baby ever born. And she still is!
Trynity loves to show dogs along side mommy, she loves gymnastics and is now on the pre-competitive team at AFX. Today Tryn has gone on the CIBC Run to End Breast Cancer. She is so excited. I am so proud.

2 Years

I still wake up thinking I have heard her bark or felt her body lying next to mine. 2 years ago on the 24th we helped Justice ease away from the pain and wait for me at the Rainbow Bridge. The pain is still there, but so are the memories.
I remember when she first met Carl. Justice was in the pen with Ty and it had been raining/slushing. I was determined that if my dogs didn't like this guy I was going to give him the boot. I asked Carl to go open the pen so the dogs could run in the backyard. He walked up to the pen and Justice grabbed a mouth full of mud and slush and tossed it on him as she ran by. She stopped in the middle of the yard and watched him with that sly Justice grin. He didn't freak out and didn't lose his cool. Carl wiped the mud away and went straight up to her and gave her a handshake. Since that day Cal and Justice were friends.
There are so many different memories that make me laugh. Then there are some that make me proud. I will forever miss you Jinx.
